Barbara Jean Crawford

Posted By obits On January 10, 2020 @ 2:05 pm In Obituaries,Outer Banks | 17 Comments

Barbara Jean Crawford born in Braxton County, West Virginia in 1953, died at home in 2020.  She is survived by her loving husband, JD Crawford of Colington Harbour, daughter Jennifer Crawford, son-in-law Frank Tuccillo and baby granddaughter Josephine Tuccillo, all of Brooklyn, NY.

Barbara was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She was an avid gardener who cultivated wonderful vegetables which she certainly never ate.  She had a soft spot for Caribbean islands and “as seen on TV” kitchen gadgets she gave as gifts at Christmas time. She studied at the French Culinary Institute and made the best sweet potato biscuits ever (there was a vote on this).  She had a lifelong passion for sweets, Diet Coke and the Weather Channel.  She smoked Winstons, cheated at cards and always told it like it was.  But beneath it all was kindness, love, generosity and wisdom for her family and anyone who needed it.

All who knew her thought she was a great gal, and all who knew her will miss her.

An open house to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held at 703 South Virginia Dare Trail in Kill Devil Hills on Friday, January 17 between the hours of 3 and 6 PM.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s name to benefit special needs education in Dare Country would be appreciated.  Contributions can be made to the Pauline Wright Endowment for Dare County through the Outer Banks Community Foundation, at 13 Skyline Road, Southern Shores, NC 27949, or can be made online at www.obcf.org.

Twiford Funeral Homes, Outer Banks is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences and memories can be shared at www.TwifordFH.com.

Barbara and daughter, Jennifer, have been close friends since they were three years old growing up on the Outer Banks.
Barbara and I shared brownie scout activities, coookie sales, camping and much more for our daughters.
Our daughters were in each other’s weddings and shared baby showers as their families grew.

We share the grief with Jennifer and family.

JD and Jennifer,
My Dad, my sister and I, and our mom are so shocked and sorry to hear of Barbara’s passing. I have fond memories of my childhood growing up with your family and our fun rides on the boat , seafood dinners, and jumping off your dock at your home in Colington. Barbara was a special lady and this obituary fits her perfectly. I pray that you find comfort in your wonderful memories with her to help you through this difficult time and I know she would have spoiled that granddaughter rotten!! Love to you both.

So sorry for your loss. I worked with Barbara at First Flight Elementary with the Multi-handicapped children. She had such a Big Heart and was so giving. Fiesty too. She told me a story about the guys going hunting and she ran out to get them groceries. She ended up in one of the ditches full of water, but was packing, so she shot out the window and got free! Comfort to the family, you all were blessed to have one Spunky Lady in your Lives.

I too worked with Barbara for many years at school. She had a huge heart with a grand sense of humor and we shared lots of laughs. I will remember her as a kind and generous soul.

Jennifer and Frank, I am saddened to hear of your mother’s passing. I’m so happy that your Mom was able to meet and love Josephine. Although I didn’t know your Mom, I know and love her mini-me, Jennifer. Today and always, may loving memories bring you peace, comfort, and strength. ❤️

JD and Jennifer I am so sorry to hear of Barbara’s passing. She was a good friend. I spent many happy hours at the skating rink. It was the place to be “back in the day.” Prayers for consolation.
