Carol “Macky” Bell, 93, of Ocracoke, NC, native of Harrison County, KY, died Monday, September 3, 2018, at Spring Arbor of The Outer Banks.
Born April 19, 1925, she was the only child of the late Kathryn R. McMurtry and Daniel C. Staton.
After graduating from Ashley Hall in Charleston, SC, Macky earned her bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Kentucky. She would pursue her teaching career with Harrison County Schools and retire after many years of teaching Physical Education and coaching cheerleaders. Macky’s love for University of Kentucky basketball was unsurpassed. A steely eyed “Go Cats!” followed by laughter, a smile, or approving nod, was a common refrain.
Although Cynthiana, Kentucky was her native home, Macky relocated to Ocracoke in 1987 and became a devoted member of Ocracoke United Methodist Church and an avid supporter of Ocracoke Schools and athletics. She was well known and loved around the island and was often seen driving around Ocracoke in her golf cart. No wine tasting at Zillie’s was complete without her there to host all who came to pass a good time. She loved being the Belle of the Ball. Macky was an avid reader and lover of children, travel, education, Willie Nelson and, of course, Ocracoke.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Rollins Bell, and a granddaughter, Brandi Bell Yates.
Macky is survived by two sons, Richard Bell (Paddy) and Mac Bell (Connie); two grandchildren, Christina Bell Jefferson (Dwayne) and Heather Poell (Timothy); and three great-grandchildren, Eli Bell Jefferson, Campbell Grey Jefferson, and Phoenix Yates.
This loving mother, grandmother, great–grandmother and friend will be sorely missed.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2018, at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church.

I lived on Ocracoke from 2000-2015 and loved Macky. She had the biggest smile, a wonderful sense of humor and an overall brightness about her. I loved seeing her. She was an exceptionally positive person and a role model for anyone who wanted to see how getting older should be done!
Love to the family and to all the many many people on Ocracoke who will be saddened by her loss. God Speed Macky ❤️

I didn’t “know” Macky, but spoke to her at Zillie’s, where she always made people feel welcome, and usually made us laugh. It will be sad not to see her the next time my husband and I are there.
My condolences to her family and dear friends, and her extended family at Zillie’s.

Mac and Rick,
So saddened to hear about the passing of your Mom. I think the last time I spoke with her was at one of the Vanderen’s annual derby parties several years ago. She looked great and still the same ole Macky that I knew when I was in her PE class, on her track team, and also on her KY State Champ Cheerleading squad that she was so proud of back in 1968. She worked our tails off!! Many fond memories of those days that I still treasure. She definitely will be missed. Sending our Love and Sympathy, Johnetta and Mike

I’m so sorry for your loss. I too have recently lost my loved one in death. This loss can be so overwhelming. Fortunately, I found comfort in God’s promise that one day I would see my dear loved one again. (John 5:28,29) May God give you the peace & comfort you need at this difficult time. (Philippians 4:6,7)

I am so sad to hear of Macky’s passing. She was so fun, and full of life! I know my mother Betty Morris loved her dearly. I was lucky to tag along on a few trips with the Cynthiana girls and to get to spend some time with her over the years. She was always so welcoming and wanted to hear all about us Morris kids. I can hear her voice even now. We all adored her. Deepest sympathy to you all. Rest peacefully Macky!

“Miss Macky” was always a part of our life, she was part of the family legend of Cynthiana and our Mother’s (Betty) friends. We grew up hearing tales of their fun times together and spent times at picnics and other gatherings of the Cynthiana girls! I had a few great conversations with around the pool at Spindletop Hall before she moved to the beach. I learned to make an oatmeal cookie from a recipe that her Mother “Miss Tatty” shared with me, that is loved by all my friends. Sad to see the last of that era passing. My sympathies to all the family.
Bill and Janice Doan
We just recently learned of Macky’s passing. We both worked with her at Harrison County High School in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. We certainly enjoyed knowing both she and Wilbur. On a trip in the 1990’s, we had the pleasure of visiting with them at Ocracoke; it was obvious how much they loved their life there. We extend our sympathy to her sons in the passing of this special lady.

I did love some “MB”!! Even if she did hit me once and awhile when I was acting up at a wine tasting!
