Charles Elmer Meekins, 86, only son of Carson and Evelyn Hooper Meekins, passed through heaven’s gates and into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Sunday morning, July 7, 2019, at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro, North Carolina.
Following high school, Charles enlisted in the United States Navy serving his country for five years. After the Navy, Charles completed two years at East Carolina University in Greenville but having been bitten by the “commercial fishing bug” he returned to Stumpy Point to be fully dedicated to this “disease” for the remainder of his working life.
In 1957, Charles married the love of his life, Clara Faye O’Neal, and together they adopted and raised two beautiful baby girls, Paula Faye in 1967, and Shanna Joy in 1970. Clara Faye went home to the Lord in 2011 to wait for Charles there.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and infant great-granddaughter, River Faye Ross. He is survived by his daughters Paula Faye Meekins and husband, Danny L. Rogers, Jr., and Shanna Meekins Harrell and husband, Richard E. Harrell; grandsons: Nicholas Ross, Mark Ross, Sammy Lenihan, Luke Ross and Leo Ross; granddaughter: Chandler O. Harrell; and great-grandsons Roan and Alex Ross. He is also survived by a host of Hooper and Meekins cousins as well as many brothers and sisters in Christ.
Charles was a faithful and devoted born again Christian who served his Master in many capacities both in his chosen church as well as daily being a torch shining brightly in a sin-darkened world. There was no one with whom Charles would not share his love for Jesus Christ, inviting them to join him as a child of God through trusting in Christ’s finished work at Calvary.
A celebration of Charles’ life will be held at Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo, North Carolina, at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, 2019. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of Charles’ choice, Dare Challenge, PO Box 123, Wanchese, NC 27981.
