Charles Warren Haskett, Jr.

Posted By obits On October 8, 2018 @ 5:29 pm In Elizabeth City,Obituaries | 12 Comments

Charlie was born in Elizabeth City, the elder son of Ada Louise Harris Haskett and Charles W. Haskett, Sr., deceased, and brother to George Clifford Haskett (Carietta Blades Haskett) who survives him.

Charlie attended Wake Forest College and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in journalism. After college he joined the US Navy as a commissioned officer. While stationed in Seattle WA he met and married Barbara Frances Randall. Together they reared four children and divorced in 1982.

Charlie was an eloquent writer, but it didn’t pay the bills, so he and Barbara returned to Elizabeth City with their young family. Charlie and his father started Haskett Construction Company, first remodeling and then building homes for 50 years. The company flourished as Charlie particularly enjoyed building new neighborhoods in town, constructing homes that families of modest means could afford. He took particular care planning Woodstock Apartments because he wanted everyone there to have a nice place to live. As a civic leader, Charlie was proud to serve as president of the Elizabeth City Jaycees, a Deacon at First Baptist Church, and on the board of directors of the local branch of Wachovia Bank and the Elizabeth City Foundation.

Charlie was a successful businessman and enjoyed the fruits of his labor, but never forgot where he came from. He gave generously to his church, The Salvation Army and just about anyone who asked him for anything. He provided college funds for all of his grandchildren because he remembered the financial hardship that came with his degree and he deeply valued education.

His four children loved him to pieces and never stopped seeking his wise counsel: Susan Marie Haskett Parker, Julia Anne Haskett Simmons, Mary Elizabeth Haskett, and Charles (Chuck) W. Haskett III. Each of them was his favorite. Charlie gave his family happy summers on the Outer Banks, first in a rust-bucket trailer on the oceanfront, then an A-frame cottage on the soundside that swayed in the breeze, and finally in a cottage on the oceanfront that was big enough for three generations to enjoy family reunions every 4th of July.

Charlie also loved his children-in-law as his own: John Parker, Stewart Rapp, and Pam Haskett. Left to cherish happy memories of their Granddaddy (“Pop”) are his ten grandchildren: Katherine Louise (Katie) and Olivia Grace Parker; David Randall (Randy) and George Woodham (Woody) Simmons; Hannah Blair and Natalie Gray Rapp; and Charles W. (Charlie) IV, James Hunter, Richard Lake, and Arthur Reed Haskett. Charlie was blessed with two great-grandbabies, Claire Lorraine Magana and Charles W. Haskett V.

In 1985 he married Janice Newbern and they enjoyed many happy years together traveling, sight-seeing, and warming up in Florida every January. Charlie and Janice enjoyed spending time together in his later years where he was most at home—on the banks of the Pasquotank River. Charlie is also survived by his step-daughters and their families: Celeste Cuthrell Morse (Paul; children Derek Tyler, Austin Cuthrell, Dustin Cuthrell) and Jan Cuthrell Adams (Tony; children Brenden Michael, Kalyn Morse) and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation with the family will be at Twiford Funeral Home on October 10, 7:00-8:30 pm and the funeral service will be held on October 11 at 11:00 am in the Twiford Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 405 E Church St, Elizabeth City.

In lieu of flowers, Charlie would appreciate a memorial donation to the local branch of The Salvation Army (PO Box 1967, Elizabeth City, NC 27909) or your local animal shelter and for you to raise a glass of Kendall Jackson chardonnay in his memory.
