Clara “Mickey” Stringer Meekins, 91, of Nags Head, NC died Monday, January 28, 2019, at Peak Resources – Outer Banks. The daughter of Florence Speck Reed and Sidney Osgood Reed, she grew up in the Utica/Oriskany area of upstate New York.

In 1948, Clara graduated from nursing school at the Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, NY. She married Walter E. Turk and settled in North Bay, NY near his family farm. Always busy, working part-time and raising six children (Nancy Bourgeois, Walter William Turk (deceased), Catherine Pfendler, Valerie Metott, Michael Turk, and Susan Conner), she still made time for others. Clara was active in Girl Scouts, 4-H, school PTO, Methodist church functions and often volunteered with Red Cross blood drives and vaccination clinics.

After Walter’s death, she married William Stringer of Cooperstown and together they retired to the Outer Banks in Manteo, NC to enjoy warmer weather and fishing. They also attended Stumpy Point United Methodist Church. Following the untimely death of William, she later married William Meekins of Stumpy Point, NC.

Clara shared her talents in arts and crafts, baking and music with her communities. She was a member of the Outer Banks Baum Center, church chorus, Outer Banks chorus, and “Sweet Caroline’s” a lady’s barbershop group. She was a volunteer driver for Dare County taking people to out of town medical appointments and filling the wait time crocheting and letter writing.

Her extended family includes twenty-seven grandchildren, forty-three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She had many wonderful friends and had a full and meaningful life.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, February 1, 2019, at Outer Banks Presbyterian Church. A celebration of life with New York extended family and friends and interment is being planned for later this year.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Outer Banks Chorus, PO Box 3657, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 or Outer Banks Presbyterian Church Choir, PO Box 2199, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948.

Nancy Bourgeois is my aunt. She is married to my uncle Dan. I know Nancy is such I beautiful, kind, sweet, soul. Once I started reading this obituary It became very clear as to why. Nancy Bourgeois it sounds to me like Your mom was an amazing woman. God Bless You and the rest of your family as you go through this challenging time. I will keep you all in my prayers at this time.

Mickey, you were a good friend, and you made good use of the transcription I did for you of “Somewhere, Overweight People Have a Ball,” which I also have used many times. It was fun knowing you, and I still have the little metal bell you gave me for Christmas. To your family, thank you for lending Mickey (Clara) to us. I don’t live in Dare County now, but am trying to get back there for my last years. She was always “up” and that means so much to those of us who sometimes have “down” moods. RIP, friend, you deserve it. Love, Mary
