Dorris Alford Fry, 89, better known as Aunt Dot, Granny, and Dotty passed away peacefully at her home on February 19, 2022, surrounded by family. She loved Roanoke Island and the Outer Banks where she lived all her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward J. Alford (Shiek) and Cora Mae Basnight; her beloved husband and father of her two children, Wayland Hannon Fry; siblings, EJ Alford (Jean), Sarah Owens, Marc Basnight (Sandy), and Della Basnight; and niece, Lisa Owens Hooper.
Dotty was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir. She attended Manteo High School and East Carolina Teachers College (ECTC). She will always be remembered for the years of serving her community with Westvaco and Dare County as the Register of Deeds. Dotty was dedicated to helping all people unconditionally. She was awarded the Manteo Citizen of the Year, served on the First Light Historical Society and was proud to have been chosen to fly on the inaugural flight of the first 747 with Lady Bird Johnson.
Dotty was a legendary figure on the Outer Banks who modeled for Aycock Brown for many years depicting her carefree spirit, love of life with that expressive smile and those captivating blue eyes. She had a natural ability to draw a crowd with her witty jokes and outrageous stories. Anyone who was lucky enough to know Dotty will have a favorite story or joke to reminisce about.
Dotty is survived by her sister, Sally Scarborough (Phil); brother, Saint Basnight (Bea); brother-in-law, Bobby Owens; two children, Hannon Fry (Lisa) and Claudia Harrington all of Manteo; four grandchildren, Colby Fry, Josie Fry, Barron Sluder (Hanna) and Bodan Harrington; four great-grandsons; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Her immense love for family and friends, her grandchildren, and extended family was unparalleled. Dotty leaves us with a beautiful legacy of a life well lived.
Service will be held graveside for family and friends at Manteo Cemetery on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, Dotty would want you to share a smile and a story and perhaps make a donation to the Cora Mae Basnight Children’s Ministry at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Manteo, North Carolina.
The family would like to recognize and sincerely thank Adoration Home Health and Hospice, Dare County Home Health Caregivers, Private Duty Caregivers Jussara, Tina and Tammy, and Dare County Meals on Wheels Volunteers.

When we arrived in Manteo 61 years ago Dotty took us under her wing and made us part of her Manteo community almost instantly. Manteo has countless heroes, but in our book Dotty would top them all.

To all of Ms Dottys family I am heartbroken to hear of her passing. It was a honor to have known her and I am sure she is in heaven smiling free from any pain and smiling with her family that went on first. My favorite story was about how she married her husband. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you through this sad time.
