Edward Paul Owens, Jr. died on Tuesday November 27, 2018 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Suzette Hewitt Owens, and his daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Frances Owens and Stan Chaudhry of London, UK, Ann and Bobby Cherry of Grimesland, NC, Katherine and David Molnar of Alexandria, VA, and grandchildren, Piers Chaudhry, Alexander Chaudhry, Sean Cherry, Caroline Molnar, and Lewis Molnar.
Mr. Owens was born in Elizabeth City on January 9, 1928, the only son of Edward Paul Owens, Sr. and Annie Elinda White Owens. He grew up in Elizabeth City and attended local public schools, prior to matriculating to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he majored in Business Administration and received a Masters of Accounting degree. Upon graduation, he married his first wife, Nancy Pendleton Owens.
He entered service in the United States Coast Guard where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Upon completion of his military service, he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation where he was decorated for his service, culminating in presentation of an award by J. Edgar Hoover for capturing one of the ten most wanted. Following assignments with the FBI in Los Angeles and New York City, he indulged his lifetime interest in cars by accepting a position with Chrysler Corporation in Tennessee. In 1960, he acquired his own franchise dealership, Ed Owens Chrysler-Plymouth, in Winston-Salem, NC, which he owned for many years. He eventually returned to Elizabeth City where he bought Davenport Motors.
Upon his retirement he continued to actively participate in the lives of his family. He enjoyed following his beloved Tar Heels, spending time at Nags Head, sailing, politics, and traveling, among other interests. He was an active member of the Church of the Redeemer in Camden, NC.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Craig Stephans officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 30, 2018 from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
