Edward Stephen Fulford, 86, of South Mills, NC, passed away June 1, 2020. Born in Norfolk on June 26, 1933, he was the son of Raymond L. and Tacie Burnham Fulford and was predeceased by his only brother, Ernest L. Fulford. He was a 1952 graduate of Great Bridge High School (Chesapeake, VA). Following his draft service in the U.S. Army, he worked a variety of jobs for Atlantic Bell, as a professional softball umpire and as a builder, developer and contractor. He was an avid poker player and loved horse racing and car racing. He lived for many years in Chesapeake in his family home, but moved to South Mills nearly fifteen years ago to be near friends and family. He was an active member of the South Mills Ruritan Club and a daily visitor at Cartwright’s Gas Station. A lifelong volunteer, he took great pride in helping make and serve meals at Great Bridge Baptist Church’s weekly suppers and at numerous fundraising events in North Carolina. He enjoyed life to the fullest and was proud to lend a hand to anyone who needed help.

Survivors include his niece, Lynda Paige Fulford of Fillmore, CA; second cousin, Mike Burnham and his wife Leona of South Mills, NC; first cousins, Gilbert Burnham, Claude Burnham and Myra Burnham Gregory; and many special friends.

A memorial service will be planned at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to South Mills Ruritan Club or to a favorite charity. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the Fulford family. Online memorial condolences may be sent to the family at www.TwifordFH.com.

Condolence from Janis & Sonny Bowyer on June 1st, 2020 6:33 pm

Dear Lynda,
We are so sorry to hear of Edward Fulford’s passing. I don’t think we have seen him since your Dad’s funeral. I have recently gathered family pictures Jimmy sent me and sent them to each living cousin. I came across pics of Rosie and the Fulford boys making me think how Edward was doing. I am so sorry …for you another relative gone. Please keep Sonny and I posted. I tried to call Rosie but no answer….. left a message.
Love you. Take care, Janis.and Sonny

Condolence from Donnie Baker on June 5th, 2020 6:26 pm

So sorry to hear about Edward’s passing. The obituary was so true- he would help wherever he was needed. On January 30, 1960 my family’s home burned down- we only had the clothes on our back. Edward took my brother Earl & I to Sullivan’s men shop and bought each of us a brand new suit & shirt- we will always remember his kindness. His mother & Mrs. Waterfield went and collected household items for our family from neighbors and friends. They showed us what loving your neighbors really means. Donnie Baker

Lynda, just learned of Edward’s passing. Having grown up with Edward and Ernie, I have fond memories of the Fulford and Waterfield families working together in many areas, including gardening and raising chickens. Betty joins me in sending our deepest sympathy in your uncle’s passing.
