It is with great sadness that the family of Edward Watson Baker, “Tom”, announces his passing. Tom Baker died on October 22, 2018, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, on June 5, 1936, to the late Mrs. Mary Edna Stanley Morse and Mr. Joseph Baker. He attended school in Weeksville, North Carolina, before entering East Carolina University. After graduation, in 1958, he married Dorothy V. Culberson of Siler City, North Carolina. Tom started his career in insurance with Nationwide in Raleigh. His many promotions took the family to New York, Virginia and finally to Pennsylvania where he started his own company, Worldwide Rehabilitation and Auditing. In addition, Tom had business ventures in the oil and natural gas industries. After twenty-seven years in Pennsylvania, he and Dorothy retired to Raleigh to be near family and friends.
Tom was married fifty-three years and was preceded in death by his wife. He is survived by his three daughters and their families; Mary Baker Brockman and her daughter Elizabeth Baker Brockman of Lynchburg, Virginia; Susan Baker Monroe, her husband Alan Brent Monroe, and their children William Harper Monroe and Sarah Katherine Monroe of Raleigh, North Carolina; Katherine Baker Neblett, and her daughters Emily Baker Neblett and Abigail Zoey Neblett of Raleigh. He is survived by stepsiblings, Calvin John “C.J.” Morse, Jr. of Weeksville and Grace Morse Overman of Hertford, North Carolina. He enjoyed good fellowship and will be remembered for his gregarious nature. Tom loved his family, friends, and wonderful neighbors.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 4, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at New Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, November 2, 2018 from 6: 00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at their home. Remembrance is welcome in the form of flowers or a contribution to the Underwood GT Magnet Elementary Foundation at underwoodfoundation.org where four of Tom’s grandchildren attended school.
