Euna ‘Betsy’ Hughes Smith, 78 of Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City,
N. C. died Monday, March 3, 2008 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Smith was born in Bertie County, North Carolina and was the daughter of the late James Willie Hughes and Alice Baker Hughes and the widow of the late Clayton Maxey Smith. She was a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, and was a retired registered nurse with Albemarle Hospital. She implemented the Infection control program and was affectionately known as ‘Bug Lady’.
Survivors included her daughter; Cheryl Sawyer and husband Phil of Camden, NC her son Barry M. Smith of Greenville, NC her sisters; Peggy H. Byrum of Elizabeth City, NC and Tressie Bunch Walston of Edenton, N. C. her four grandchildren Philip Sawyer, II and Clayton Sawyer both of Camden, NC Jennifer Lebruska of Topeka, KS and Daphine Smith of Greenville, NC, one great granddaughter Makayla Lebruska of Topeka, KS. She was preceded in death by her sister Mary Alice Hess, and her brothers Sidney Hughes, Manley Hughes and Raleigh Frank Hughes.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 6, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. James Clark officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 5, 2008 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel.
