Frederick Lindley Haney, Jr., 80, of 1103 Little River Drive, Elizabeth, City, NC entered into eternal peace on July 11, 2017. He was born in Durham, NC on October 1, 1936 to the late Frederick Lindley Haney, Sr. and Bessie Juanita Overacre Haney. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Joyce Haney, to whom he was married for 46 years. In addition, he is survived by four children, Brad Buckner and wife, Susan; Michael Haney and wife, Florence; Gale DeCoster; John Haney and husband, Bruce Martin; one grandson, Finn Haney; and a brother, William Kent Haney. In addition, he is survived by a niece, Sheri Haney; 3 nephews, Robbie Haney, Kent Haney, Jr. John Robinson, cousins, and loving friends. Mr. Haney was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Haney Robinson,
Mr. Haney, a graduate and avid supporter of N. C. State University, began his career as a Radio Engineer broadcasting news from the U. S. Coast Guard Courier. He continued his career with the United States Government and devoted 37 years of patriotic, loyal and meritorious service as a Foreign Service Staff Officer with the United States Department of State. His services included but are not limited to managing and serving as executive officer for multiple Voice of America Stations around the world – Liberia, Africa; Rhodes, Greece; Kavala, Greece; Antigua; Belize, South America; Delano, California; and Bethany, Ohio. In his retirement years, he was actively involved in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary serving in many capacities. In addition, he enjoyed spending time on the water sailing his Catamaran sailboat, flying airplanes and playing his various musical instruments.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 11:00 am in the Twiford Memorial Chapel by Pastor Phil Grasty, with an interment immediately following at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford’s Funeral Home on Friday evening, July 14, 2017 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. All other times, the family will gather at the home of Brad & Susan Buckner, 109 Marian Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC. Flowers are welcome; however, memorial donations can be made to Freedom Baptist Ministries, P. O. Box 1668, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
