Gerald Franklin White, Sr., 91, of Rochelle Drive, Elizabeth City died Saturday, February 24, 2018 at his residence. He was born September 26, 1926 near Sunbury, NC in Gates County to the late Robert Peyton White and Teresa Taylor White. As a youth he joined Beulah Baptist Church in Sunbury. He grew up in the Sunbury and Corapeake communities and graduated Sunbury High School May 7, 1943 at sixteen years of age as the Valedictorian of his class. At age seventeen, he began his two years of service in the US Navy and was assigned to the US Naval Training Center, Bainbridge Maryland followed by three months of intensive training as a Medical Corpsman at the same Naval Base. Thereafter, he served as a pharmacist mate in the U. S. Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia, until honorably discharged in 1946. He enrolled in Wake Forest College in September 1946 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in May 1949; three academic years plus two full summer sessions. He was elected to the National Honorary Society of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with academic rank of Magna Cum Laude. He enrolled in the Wake Forest Law School in September 1949 and graduated in May 1952 with a Bachelor of Law and later advanced to Doctor of Jurisprudence. He was academically ranked first in his graduating law class of forty-two students.
Gerald was employed by the Attorney General of North Carolina in October 1952 and continued in that employment until May 1955. While a resident of Raleigh, NC he joined Hayes Barton Baptist Church and attended both Hayes Barton and Pullen Memorial Baptist Church. In May 1955 he opened an office on Main Street in Elizabeth City for the general practice of law and joined The First Baptist Church, where he served on many and varied committees as well as a Trustee for nine years.
Always community oriented, he served with the Elizabeth City Chamber of Commerce, a Director of Farmers Bank of Sunbury, the Pasquotank Board of Social Services, the Board of Trustees of the College of the Albemarle and a term as Chairman, the Campbell University Board of Trustees, the Elizabeth City Lions Club, The President’s Club of Wake Forest University, and the Wake Forest University Law School Alumni Council.
He married the former Sara Holcomb of Elkin, NC August 25, 1956. In addition to his wife he is survived by three children, Mary Franklin White Church and husband Gari, Gerald F. White, Jr. and H. Bryan White. There are three grandchildren, Sara Cole, Susan Andrews and Garitt Church; numerous great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a special niece Mabel White Howell of Rocky Mount, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Elizabeth White Stuber, Marvin P. White, Forrest D. White, Mildred T. White, and Gerald S. White.

A memorial service will be held Friday, March 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at The First Baptist Church of Elizabeth City with the Rev. Paul Batson officiating.
