Gwendolyn “Gwen” Compton Bricker, 65, of Manteo, NC, formerly of Culpeper, VA died at her home on Wednesday, July 5, 2017. Born in Martinsville, VA on March 25, 1952, she was the daughter of Vera Christine Wingfield Gregory and the late Elmo Powell Compton, Jr, and the “adopted” daughter of Robert Bricker of Montana.
Gwen was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro receiving her Bachelors and Masters degrees. She then taught at the Department of Defense Dependent School in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, Garfield High School, Bel-Aire Elementary School and most recently JW Alvey Elementary School in Prince William County, VA.
A friend to many, Gwen was an inspiring teacher who made learning fun for all ages and instilled her love of reading into her students. She enjoyed crafting, traveling, beach going, sewing, playing Bunko with neighbors, and was considered a supreme shopper. Gwen loved celebrating and decorating for Christmas, and most important to her was raising her beautiful and smart daughter, Emily.
Along with her mother, Christine Gregory, Gwen is survived by her husband, Steven Bricker; daughter, Emily Bricker of Manteo, NC; sister, Cynthia Parks (Ron) of Winston Salem, NC; brother, Peter Compton (Karen) of Martinsville, VA; nieces and nephews, Catherine Parks Chantril, Nicholas Parks, Elmo P. Compton IV, Cristen Anderson, Elizabeth Scales, and Mary Grace Braxton; and many wonderful cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. John Dutton officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives following the service at the home, 103 Rial Court, Manteo, NC 27954.
