Henry Dean Haywood, 85, died on June 28, 2015 at Colony Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the son of the late Henry and Sally Evelyn Haywood. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Julia Haywood.

Henry was a native and lifelong resident of Big Colington Island. He retired after 32 years from the National Park Service, where he was very dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Wright Brothers National Memorial. He received the Distinguished Employee Award from the National Park Service/ Department of the Interior. He proudly served in our nation’s military as a United States Marine. He was very passionate about Dare County and served on numerous boards including the Dare County Health Board as Vice Chairman and Chairman and the Dare County Planning Board. He was a large supporter of the Colington Volunteer Fire Department where he was the first Fire Chief.

Most importantly was his love for his church, Colington United Methodist Church. His family donated the land in 1885 for the church to be built. He served as trustee for so many years no one knows the exact dates.

Surviving are his children, Phil Ray Haywood (Connie) of Colington, Robert Clayton “Bobby” Haywood (Carol) of Manteo, Terry Haywood Beasley of Currituck, David Scott Haywood (Penny) of Colington and special niece, Tina Daniels of Wanchese. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marla Dean Haywood. He was a proud grandfather to Charles Haywood (Marcie), Kari Lynn Haywood, Micky Haywood, Katy Jo Haywood Walker (Joe), Mikey Buck Haywood, Jennifer Beasley and Whitney Haywood. He loved being “Papa” to his great grandchildren, Abby and Caroline Haywood, Leah and Jordan Haywood, Audrey Brickhouse, Carter Collins and Baylee and Madeline Gail Walker. He was predeceased by a great grandson, Ryan Beasley.

The family appreciates all the love and support their family has received, especially from Colington United Methodist Church and the Colington Volunteer Fire Department.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 3, 2015 at 2:00pm at Colington United Methodist Church with the Rev. Teresa Holloway officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Colington North End Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Colington United Methodist Church, PO Box 3425, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 or the Colington Volunteer Fire Department, 108 Schoolhouse Road, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948.

I am so sorry for your loss. I loved this man and his kind and gentle spirit. He was such a wonderful person who gave a pat on the back or a warm smile to everyone. He never sought fame or recognition, but was a leader among us. I met Henry Dean and Julia through Colington UMC and had the pleasure of helping with the Angel Tree while I worked at Walmart. We lost a good man, but God gained an angel and a friend. My condolences to you all.

It’s hard to express the loss I personally feel with the passing of a genuine old friend. I worked with Henry at Wright Brothers after I returned from Vietnam and we spent a bit of time exchanging war stories. There was never a dull moment if you were with Henry. The world will be a less fun place to be. My condolences to all of his large family. Rest assured that Henry and Mrs. Julia are together again.

Condolence from Ronnie and Melanie Ballance on June 30th, 2015 7:13 am

Bobby, Phil, Terry and Scott,
We are so sorry for your loss, your dad and mom were such great people and your dad was so great to talk to.
Our prayers go out for all of you and your families. As we go through life there are people who have to leave us and in doing so there is a void in life. Your dad and mom were of those souls that left such an impact on the people around them that they leave us all with a void that can never be filled. But also leave us all with memories
to be cherished for our lifetime.
With our prayers and fond memories. Ronnie and Mel

My condolences to your family.. May the God of peace give you comfort during this difficult time.. And the Bible promise us that in the future there is going to a resurrection. John 5:28,29 Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice, and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life. May you find comfort and hope from this…

As I think back to all of the wonderful funny memories of your family one comes to my mind today. The anniversary party. That was really something and your dad and mom were so proud of all of their children. You all were given such a wonderful gift as to have Henry Dean and Ms. Julia as your parents. Their love for family was truly amazing. Always family first no matter what it took. I hope that some of those qualities I will share in my life.

My heart is heavy as I write this for the Haywood Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. My dear wonderful friend Terry lots of love.
