Jeanne Chappell White, age 86, died June 24, 2015, at her home in Hertford, NC. A native of Perquimans County, she was the daughter of the late Nereus William and Leora Ward Chappell, and the widow of Hilton McCoy (Whitey) White.

Jeanne’s service to the citizens of Perquimans County began in the Sheriff’s Office, continued in the Clerk of Court’s Office and culminated in her election to the position of Register of Deeds in 1976. She was the first woman elected to a county office in Perquimans County. She held this position until her retirement in 1993. She served twelve years as Clerk to the Perquimans County Board of Commissioners, on the Board of Directors of the Perquimans County Restoration Association, on the Board of Trustees of The Museum of the Albemarle, on the Planning Board for the Town of Winfall and was an instructor of Notary Public Training at College of the Albemarle.

She was a member of the New and Bold Decorators, which was a group of friends who offered their decorating talents throughout the region with proceeds benefiting the Newbold-White House restoration. She was appointed by Gov. James Hunt to serve as Chairman of the Perquimans County Committee for America’s 400th Anniversary Celebration from 1984 to 1987.

Jeanne is survived by her daughter, Dianne White Stallings, of Belvidere; sons, David H. White of Atlanta, GA and Reginald L. White, of Raleigh; three grandsons, Tim Phelps, Graham White and Colin White; a great granddaughter, Carly Jeanne Phelps; a step granddaughter, Jovan Ward and husband Quincy; great grandsons, Wesley and Matthew Ward; sisters, Zenovah White of Belvidere, Willie Mae Symons of Hertford, Linda Roberts of Virginia Beach, VA; brother, N. W. (Bill) Chappell, Jr. and wife, Ruby of Richmond, VA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Douglas Stallings.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Hertford Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 124 West Market Street, Hertford, NC on Saturday, June 27, at 3:00 p.m. and will be officiated by the Rev. Gene Boyce. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Perquimans County Restoration Association, P. O. Box 103, Hertford, NC 27944.     Reggie,
    I did not know your mom that well, but do remember her from when we were kids. Also heard Carole(Tim) talk about her often. We all have feelings that are a little more personal when someone we remember from the past loses a family member. God bless your family.
