Stepp

Jimmie (Jack) Stepp, Jr., age 87, of Poplar Branch, NC, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on August 6, 2015. Jim was born in Monaville, WV, Logan County, on August 02, 1928, to the late Jimmie Stepp and Ella Vance. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Freda Jo; brother, Cecil; sister, Juanita; brother, Bob; and infant daughter, Julia Jo.

Jimmie joined the US Navy in 1948 and was honorably discharged in 1953. He spent the majority of his time on the US Destroyer USS Wallace L. Lind, Sixth Fleet, which traveled all over the world. After leaving the Navy, he began working for the C&P Telephone Company in Logan, WV.

Jim retired from AT&T after over 35 years of an illustrious career in the telecommunications industry. He began as a telephone repairman and after working his way into higher levels of management, was ultimately responsible for training employees in 4 states.

After his first retirement from AT&T in West Virginia, he and his devoted wife, Jo, moved to Poplar Branch, NC, where he quickly began his second career in commercial fishing. He knew the Currituck Sound as well as he knew the telecommunications industry. He spent several years net fishing, soft shell crabbing, crabbing, eeling, and entertaining his family, friends, and grandchildren with boat rides and fishing trips.

His next career involved managing the Corolla Light Resort in Corolla. He helped build the resort to what it is today. After spending several years at Corolla Light, he actually retired, other than producing a fantastic vegetable garden every year. He furnished neighbors, friends, and his son’s restaurant with fresh, delicious produce. His tomatoes were known near and far, along with the best snap beans ever grown!

Jim is survived by daughters, Leah J Trippett and Dena D Jakubosky (Tom); son, Wes Stepp; six grandchildren, Brittany L Frenzel (James), Jackie R Stepp, Taylor Balderson, Alexandra (Allie) W Stepp, Jennifer L Jakubosky, and Eric T Jakubosky; sister, Eulaine Short; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends.

The family would like to thank the caregivers who provided so much love and support for Jim and his family, especially to those who helped recently: Ushana Williams, Christina Lewis, Andrea Miller, John Sanchez, Carrie Jones and Community Home Care & Hospice.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate the life of Jim on August 24, 2015, at 2:00 pm, in his field ½ mile North of Sharon Church (look for the bird houses) with a reception immediately following at the Sharon United Methodist Church, 275 Poplar Branch Road, Poplar Branch, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Currituck SPCA, P.O. Box 827, Maple, NC 27956.

Marilyn and I got to know Jim when he came to Corolla Light as the manager. He was a very
special person to our whole family. Our youngest daughter worked for him as a lifeguard.
He took our grandsons fishing on the sound and they still talk about how many rockfish they caught and why Mr. Stepp made them release all of them because they were out of season.Jim will live on in the heart of all those who knew and loved him!
