John Wesley Burgess, Jr, 70 of 312 Locust Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday November 4, 2017 in Elizabeth City surrounded by his loved ones. He was born to the late John Wesley Burgess, Sr. and Sallie Irene Hughes Burgess and was the husband of Eileen Clark Burgess. He was a retired federal officer with the Department of Defense, a member of the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post #6060 and served in the U.S. Army being the most decorated Vietnam Veteran in the area.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his son John Wesley Burgess, III; daughter, Laura Anne Burgess Spade (Scott) all of Elizabeth City, NC; two-step-sons, David Lee Clark, Jr. and Michael Clark; a step-daughter, April Cox; those he consider daughters include Elizabeth Mendonca, and Cheryl Matthews, and Paulina Jean Kunze; two sisters, Rebecca Sanderlin (Bobby) and Joyce Morrow (Raymond); two brothers, Ben Burgess (Theresa) and A. B. Burgess (Gail); five grandchildren Ben Cox and Amber Cox, Nolynn Spade, Benjamin Clark and David L. Clark, III; and one great granddaughter, Lilith Cox; several nieces and nephews; and several great and great great nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Joy Burgess; his second wife, Linda Burgess; two sisters, Pearl Williams and Carol Kight; and three brothers, Hurbert Burgess, Bill Burgess, and A.B. Burgess.
The family visitation will be held Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel followed by a Celebration of Life Ceremony. Wesley will be given full military honors outside the chapel in the Samuel A. Twiford Veterans Memorial Park. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery.
