Jonathan Chad Jones, 42, of Manteo, NC died Saturday, April 25, 2020.

Born in New Bern, NC on April 10, 1978, he was the son of John Wilson Jones (Rebecca) and the late Bernice Taylor.

A graduate of Manteo High School, Chad began his career as an EMT later becoming a flight paramedic. After earning his pilot’s license, he began serving Dare County as an EMS helicopter pilot. Chad was then promoted to Chief Pilot and Director of Operations for Dare MedFlight.

His reputation as a prankster was second to his heart of gold. He was compassionate and sincere with a willingness to help others and a light that shined for all to see. Chad had a way with words. He enjoyed golfing, playing his guitar, singing, boating, and riding his motorcycle. Most importantly, he was a great man and an even better father. Chad was a member of Manteo Lodge #521 AF & AM.

In addition to his father and stepmother, he is survived by his son, Caleb M. Jones; brother, Ethan Jones; his girlfriend, Suzie Allison; his mentor, Milton Eaton; close family friends, Christie and Anthony Bassi; and his beloved dog, Wilson.

In light of the best practices in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a celebration of Chad’s life will be held in the future.

JJ, Becky, family, our brothers and sisters from Dare Co. EMS. As a former member I worked many times with Chad. I was very proud to have had the time spent in the ambulance and also with Milton when I flew with them on some calls. He was never without a smile. He had a certain way of making you feel good even when you were down. A friend to all he met he will be missed greatly. They say heaven is a better place once our job is done on Earth. GOD keep this wonderful man till we all can meet again. Family and friends, we will keep him in our hearts and will not forget my thoughts and prayers will be with you. Until we meet again my friend.

Condolence from Philip Timbrell on April 30th, 2020 7:30 am

I was greatly saddened by the news of Chad’s passing. I met him many years ago as a young flight instructor given the dubious job of teaching me to fly a helicopter. , As we flew together a friendship formed and we even had a helicopter tour business together in the outer banks .I saw this young man grow all the way to chief pilot of a medivac unit and still had more to come. I know his proudest accomplishment though was his son Caleb , who he was very proud of. and often talked. about. My condolences to his family and friends , may your pain be eased slightly by knowing how many people Chad helped and made laugh

Condolence from Phil & Jane Spindler on April 30th, 2020 10:54 am

Condolence from Jennifer Rice on April 30th, 2020 6:41 pm

Chads Family- I am so sorry for your loss. I rode on the ambulance with Chad back in our 20’s. We both were new medics and Paul, Duncan, Chad and I spent many shifts together in Kitty Hawk that year. He always had me laughing. He often insisted on driving the rig so I’m not sure if that was his fear of my driving;) I am so grateful for that time knowing him. He helped a lot of people.

Condolence from Rita A Lewark-Pledger on May 2nd, 2020 10:23 am

So sorry to hear this. You were one of Sammy’s close to the heart friends. And he was so fond of that little boy Chad, who hung out at the hangar. Sammy was so pleased when he heard how Chad progressed in his career in flying. He had a big grin when he heard of Chad’s accomplishments. They are both flying high in another wonderful place. God Bless you and your family in this trying time.

Condolence from Heather Matthews on May 6th, 2020 3:00 pm

To Chad’s family: Please know that you are and continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. Although I never had the opportunity to personally meet you, he often spoke of you. Caleb was truly his greatest accomplishment in this world, never has a father been more proud of his son! I will cherish the memories I have of the wonderful adventures that we went on together. Chad’s heart was big and he enjoyed living and working in the community in which he served so selflessly. His passion for helping others not only existed in the sky, but far beyond what we could ever imagine. Chad was truly a great friend to me at a time when God knew I needed one!!! God Bless You All.

Condolence from Ron Stevenson on May 7th, 2020 8:34 am

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Chad. I had the pleasure of meeting him 2010 and worked closely with him since that time. We enjoyed a trip to Germany together when MedFlight was buying the new helicopter. He was truly a wonderful human being and close friend. He spoke often and was very, very proud of Caleb You will be sorely missed, my friend. Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your life.

Condolence from Shannon and Scott Cascarano on May 7th, 2020 9:35 pm

Oh Chadius, your gut busting pranks and jokester demeanor never failed to crack us up! You introduced me to DMB by belting out toons whenever and wherever you liked. We didn’t mind, we loved hearing you sing. From the smart ass retorts to the compassionate advice, you were there for so many! Then ya made me an Aunt. I’ll never forget your facial expression watching Caleb as you passed him to me to hold at the hospital. He was the best gift ever and boy could you see that through those fatherly eyes in that day! My heart smiles every time I think of that day. You were changed forever. Your heart was stolen on that day! You taught him well and he is a wonderful man. You did it man!

Your infectious smile and the sound of your laugh will be missed but remembered as long as I live. The lives you touched and your heart of gold has left a mark of love in us all. You are deeply missed and will forever have a place in our hearts! Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with us. We love you. Rest In Peace Brother!

Condolence from Leslie Lenkens-Mays on May 11th, 2020 3:30 pm

I was so sorry to hear of Chad’s passing. He used to give me a ride home from work way back in 1995. We went to school together and graduated at the same time. He lived one street over from us and him and his brother would play touch football and basketball with my brothers. He was a wonderful person and always made time for young annoying boys who just wanted to hang out with the “cool” older guys. I was glad to see he had such a wonderful life and got all the things anyone could have ever dreamed of. My heart goes out to you and your family through this difficult time. He will be missed.
