On the evening of February 3, 2018, Josephine Marie Fessler finished a busy day at her home in Nags Head. She had some friends and family stop by and she was tired. As usual, Jo said her evening prayers and quietly went to bed. In her peaceful sleep, she was called by her Heavenly Father to come and join Him in His Eternal Kingdom. She now rests forever in His loving arms.
Josephine Marie Fessler was born in Boston, MA to Thomas and Agnes Kent on April 5, 1932. She is predeceased by them as well as by her husband, Richard; her daughter, Jacqueline; and grandson, Gabriel. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Clarkin and husband Michael of Nags Head; grandchildren, John, Sean, Leslie, Jolyn, Margaret, and Mike; great-grand-daughter, Darian; and goddaughter, Sonya. Also, surviving is her ” guardian angel”, Cynthia, and her ever faithful cat-companion “Cooper”.
Jo, as she preferred to be called, began her working career in Washington, D.C. working with Navy Intelligence through the Kennedy Administration. This employment led her to the job she truly loved, working for NASA as a Legislative Affairs Specialist. Her work put her in close contact with the astronauts and their families during the Apollo, Gemini and Mercury space programs. Additionally, she came into close contact with the families of the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations. While thus employed, Jo met and subsequently married the love of her life, Richard, who was also working for NASA at the time. They made a home in Arlington, VA, retiring together in 1975 and moving to Nags Head.
Jo was one of the charter members of the “Show Stoppers” surf fishing team. She served as chief judge with the board of elections for Nags Head for over 20 years. In 1992, she was appointed as trustee for the Nags Head Fire Dept. Relief Fund, which provides support to Nags Head Fire and Rescue. Jo was a faithful parishioner of Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church. Jo was a tireless and ever-present contributor to the Outer Banks that she loved, especially to the Town of Nags Head. She will be dearly missed by all those whose lives she touched.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at Holy Trinity by the Sea Catholic Chapel, Nags Head by Rev John A. Hanley, osfs. A reception will follow at Pamlico Jacks Restaurant, also in Nags Head.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Spay and Neuter Today, 1201 W. Durham Street, Kill Devil Hills, NC, 27848 or Nags Head Fire and Rescue Department, P.O. Box 99, Nags Head, NC, 27959.
