Katherine Ross

Posted By obits On June 29, 2015 @ 12:07 pm In Manteo,Obituaries,Outer Banks | 28 Comments

Katherine Gordon Galusha Ross of her beloved Manteo, North Carolina lived on this earth as long as she could.  She was certain she would be with God and her dear dogs in heaven, and died with peace in her heart.

Katherine is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Mary Kevan Roper and George Herbert McNeal Roper and their children Mary Kevan Roper Moore and her husband Thomas Daniel Moore, George Herbert McNeal Roper, Jr., and Gordon Bohannan Galusha Roper.  Katherine is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law Anna Hunt Galusha Aquino and Charles Anthony Aquino, and their children Andrew Charles Aquino and Adam Anthony Aquino.

Kitty attended Bollingbrook School in Petersburg, Virginia and graduated from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia in 1984 where she studied art.  She sped away in her car after the ceremony before her family could find her to give a congratulatory hug for North Carolina’s Outer Banks and she never looked back.  Katherine loved the beach life, especially Pirate’s Cove Marina where she worked in various positions over the years.  The ocean, boats, sand and seagulls—those were her requirements.

Besides being devastatingly beautiful, Katherine was hilarious and kept us in stitches since she was a little girl with skits and impressions.  That humor masked a deep sadness Katherine carried for the suffering of animals.  She was not afraid to face and tackle outrages perpetrated on defenseless dogs and animals throughout the world, and she positively impacted the lives of countless animals in need.  Animals were her passion and their pain was her cross to bear.

Katherine was admired and adored by her many friends, cherished by her family as a Weeping Willow with whom they shared a life story and all love.

A memorial service will be held for Katherine at Blandford Cemetery, 319 South Crater Road in Petersburg, Virginia, 23805 on Thursday July 2nd at 3:00 pm followed by a reception at Christ and Grace Episcopal Church, 1545 South Sycamore Street in Petersburg.

A local memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 7:00pm at Katherine’s home, 804 Back Bay Road, Manteo, NC with the Rev. Steve Smith officiating.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to your favorite animal charity.

Condolence from Ava Hancock on June 29th, 2015 4:08 pm

I knew her a short time, but we bonded over our love for animal rescue and mutual grief. She was a true beauty inside and out. Selfless, caring and kind. I will miss her so much and look to the day when I may see her again, in a place with no pain and no tears.

I am making a donation to Great Plains Mastiff Rescue, which I work with and she helped me promote.

God bless!

I never had the honor to meet Katherine in person, we kept in contact with her since she was a loyal supporter of our Organization, she helped us tremendously. She had a generous heart.

Her love and compassion for animals truly inspired us in many levels, she trust us and devoted her time learning about our needs and how she could help all voiceless beings.

We feel deeply touch by her kind heart. This amazing kind soul will be missed.

God bless her soul.

Condolence from Lenka kopel on June 30th, 2015 6:09 am

my deepest condolences ..
The Loss of a beautiful loving woman.

Have known Kath for 5 years . We bonded over our passion for animal rigts. She was one of the kindest most generous women I have ever met .
When working n fighting for animals rights in Brazil, Kath was always the One to give me strength to carry on and would take the time to ask : how are you lenka ? Anything I can do ?
I would like to remember Kath as a strong woman who passed away due to her own personal issues and depression not because she could not handle seeing animal suffering .she wanted all to keep going , fighting for animal rights .

She has asked me to promise her to post the reason for her passing , which I did and kept her wish .
I miss Kath dearly and have a huge hole in my heart
Xx Australia , lenka

Condolence from Susan Wilson on June 30th, 2015 9:35 am

My sincere condolences are offered to you, Katherine’s loved ones. I did not know Katherine here on this earth nor did I knowingly meet her here on Roanoke Island. After I read your loving obituary for Katherine, it kept tugging at my heart. I do know that we were of one kindred spirit though because of a shared love for all animals. I loved her truth that their lives really did matter. I am sorry that I did not have the honor of knowing her. Please take comfort in knowing that she was met at the Rainbow Bridge by countless fur friends running to greet her with wagging tails and smiling faces. She is finally in her peaceful home forever because of God’s grace. May God give you the comfort and peace that you will need now and in the days ahead. Just know that you will see her again one day. Katherine will be waiting for ya’ll and smiling.

Condolence from Michelle Reichmann on June 30th, 2015 5:52 pm

I thought I should share the story of how Katherine and I met. We both signed a petition on Change.org to push officials in Canada to rescue a golden retriever being kept holed up in a basement. I shared with my animals rescue friends, and many stepped up and signed. Katherine shared with her friends, and again, many signed. We were both following the progress of the story, as the dog was not being rescued. I called the petitioner and couldn’t get a straight answer. Katherine called the animal authorities in charge, and they indicated no laws were being broken. The person who made the accusations kept making the story sound like the situation was deteriorating, but when I talked to her, she told me she was pulling down the petition, as animal activists were threatening to storm the house to rescue the dog. The petitioner told me she didn’t want anyone to get hurt. Both Katherine and I felt we had been deceived by the petitioner, how could she have asked for help, then pulled the petition once it gained support? Katherine and I both agreed that storming the house was a good idea, whatever it took to get that dog out of the dark basement, off the heavy chain it was reported to be on. Further investigation showed that the story was fictional, made up by the petitioner to get back at her neighbors, for who knows what, but that forged the bond between us, and our friendship blossomed. Katherine became a substantial supporter of the rescue group I work with, AWABosnia. She was always helping me out with the big projects, and I loved her passion for the animals. I am so sorry that you have lost such a lovely person, that all of humanity has lost such a beautiful soul. She touched people all over the world, and I don’t think she had any idea how many people would mourn her loss, and how many would cry for her. She was so humble, and I wish she would have known what a huge impact she had on people all over the world, not to mention how many animal lives she saved. Condolences from all those in Bosnia, Denmark and the United States that she assisted.

Condolence from A loving friend on June 30th, 2015 10:27 pm

A poem for my special friend

Your special friendship, so sweet and kind..
I remember your smile, laughter and mine.
Along with our sadness we shared for a time…We giggled. And laughed and even shared our tears, and talks about our
younger years.
We talked of tomorrows and even the day, and somehow i felt your sadness at bay.
We spoke of our worries, sorrows and tears, But believed there would somehow come happier years.
A heart of love to receive and give,
She freely gave without reprieve.
Her love to rescue animals needs, she offered and gave them much relief.
From her inward loneliness and fears of tomorrow, She felt this world of pain and sorrow.
BUT WAIT. ….my friends….there’s more ahead. .. For this precious woman who loved and cared!
A New Sunrise in heaven she sees, far beyond any care, any needs.
In the arms of Jesus she rests her soul,
From the many heartached, and trials untold.
She says to her family everything’s alright,.You gave me me love and the best of life.
I’ll save you a place here where we will meet and live with you and Katie in peace.
There’s more to come,so look ahead, with a heart of joy instead of dread.
I’m. In the arms of God you’ll see,and he’ll be watching over you and me.
FINALLY….the love, joy, happiness and peace, i came to find at Jesus’s feet. Love to all.!!

My Good Death
by Dalia Shevin

I will find myself waist deep in high summer grass. The humming shock of the golden light.
And I will hear them before I see them and know right away who is bounding across the field to meet me.
All my good dogs will come then, their wet noses bumping against my palms, their hot panting, their rough faithful tongues.
Their eyes young and shiny again. The wiry scruff of their fur, the unspeakable softness of their bellies, their velvet ears against my cheeks.
I will bend to them, my face covered with their kisses, my hands full of them.
In the grass I will let them knock me down.

Condolence from Bill Woolman on July 2nd, 2015 4:24 pm

My deepest condolances on your loss. Kitty was a very special person. She didn’t have a mean bone in her body. She was one of the sweetest and most caring people I knew. I was lucky to have known her and called her my friend. SHe will be missed by many people.

Condolence from Kate on July 2nd, 2015 4:25 pm

I am so sorry to hear of this loss. I met Katherine in 2011. She welcomed me into her home, having never met me, and we immediately began a night-long conversation over my favorite topic… Rescuing dogs. I remember coming into the house and there were 4 (maybe 5?) dogs all around. On the couch, the floor,… Everywhere. At the time I only had 2 dogs – both rescues. There is something incredibly happy about a home with dogs. I would see Katherine from time-to-time around town and very often, a dog (or two) could be seen in the car. The funny thing… If you looking into my car window… You’d see the same. Maybe it’s a Katherine thing? Maybe Katherine is somehow an old-world name for “animal lover” …just maybe? I would often read the articles she would share and would have to stop because the suffering hurt my heart. I admire her courage In facing the fight for the “underdog” (quite literally) in the face. She never, ever looked the other way. She always gave what she could to ensure a happy home or, at the very least, another meal for an animal in need. As I write this, I now have 3 loving dogs and a horse– all rescues– which are my children.

I am certain that Katherine’s heaven is filled with loving animals, all of which welcomed her with wagging tails– a sure sign that she was finally home.

To the family, I cannot imagine your suffering. Please know that EVERY person Katherine touched was better for it.

Katherine, take care of the ones who are up with you. I will do my best to watch out and help the ones still here. You are missed.

Condolence from Stuart Napier on July 3rd, 2015 7:38 pm

My wife and I live in Virginia but have been coming to the Outer Banks since the mid 1960s. We have a cottage in Kill Devil Hills but love manteo. We come to Manteo several times a year anbd and stay at the Tranquil Inn every New Years Eve. We consider ourselves at least “honorary” OBX’ers.

As I read Katherine’s obit (we subscribe to The Coastland Times) she sounded like the type of person I would have loved to meet. A warm and caring person with a love for animals and the coastland life.

RIP, Katherine Ross and may all the animals you loved and saved be with you for evermore.

Condolence from Marcia Sawyer Bryant on July 6th, 2015 10:25 am
