Lane Loyd Carlton opt 1

Carlton Lane, 78, entered peacefully into eternal rest on June 9, 2022, as a result of Leukemia. He resided in his home of twenty years in Currituck, North Carolina with his wife Nedra and grandson, Jules Lane. Before moving to Currituck in 2001, Loyd Carlton Lane lived for 32 years in Richmond, Virginia, where he enjoyed a successful career in business.

Born on April 13, 1944 in Perquimans County, NC, he was the son of the late Loyd Sanford Lane and Audrey Cartwright Lane. He was preceded in death by his brother, Forrest Ray Lane.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nedra Lane; two children, Loyd Jason Lane and Adriann Lane Haney; three grandchildren, Tia-Marie Lane, Jules London Lane, and Carson Wyatt Haney; one great grandchild, niece Christy Lane, niece Sarah Sorrentino and sister-in-law Arlene Bassford.

Having never truly retired, when he was not working, Carlton enjoyed golfing, carpentry, hiking, and was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 127 with his grandson Jules Lane.

Known as an active man with a love of nature, Carlton hiked the Grand Canyon from rim to rim 5 times, the last being at age 72. In the years preceding his death, Carlton enjoyed taking trips with his grandson Jules to Camp Raven Knob. The running joke within the camp was “If you want to get lost, follow Carlton.”

Carlton Lane is remembered as a kind, generous, and hard-working husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is truly missed. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Twiford Memorial Chapel in Elizabeth City, NC, officiated by Pastor Jerry Cribb. A private family burial will be held at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the lobby following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Boy Scouts of America, or the charity of your choice.

Condolence from Jill and Matthew Mullins and family on June 18th, 2022 1:40 pm

We have been saddened by the sudden loss of our dear friend, Carlton. We have known him for 10+ years through church and many years of scouting events.
Matthew and I both agree that there are few people you meet who are as down-to-earth and sincere as Carlton. He was kind, good-natured, optimistic, and adventurous. We grew close to him through weekly meetings and cub scout campouts. Since Jules and Preston became boy scouts, Carlton became Matthew’s scouting confidant and adult camping buddy. He admired Carlton’s zest for life and how he took on any new trail or adventure. Each year, he hiked all over the mountains at Raven Knob Summer Camp. Although he was 25-35 years older than most adults there, it didn’t slow him down.
Matthew has said how Carlton was a reassuring “voice of reason,” especially during these trying, last few years. I still recall him thoughtfully dropping an extra set of golf clubs off at our house, after learning that Preston was interested in golf. He had a sincere interest in people and the gift for gab. On one occasion, he stood in our front yard talking to Preston for over an hour about a variety of subjects. They were both animated and it was a mutual enjoyment! These are just some of the memories that we will treasure.
We are grateful to have had him in our lives and will always remember him with affection. He was one-of-a-kind and will be deeply missed. ❤️

Condolence from Boy Scout Troop 127 on June 18th, 2022 1:45 pm

We are all mourning the very sudden loss of our dear friend and fellow scout family member, Mr. Carlton. He was kind, easygoing, helpful, sincere, wise, fun, adventurous, and a fountain of knowledge. We are all so fortunate to have had him as a loyal friend and will feel the huge loss of his presence in our troop. It will be extremely difficult to not have him with us at summer camp this year, but we will all have to hike a little harder, higher, and farther, in Mr. Carlton’s honor. He had a strong moral compass and was an honorable role model for our boys. He was very special and will be deeply missed. ❤️

Condolence from Ann McNamee on June 19th, 2022 2:00 pm

Reading Carlton’s obituary makes me feel SAD & HAPPY. SAD because I still expect to see his smile & countenance whenever we saw each other in the mornings or during the day as we lived right next door to each other for 20 years. He was a true friend in my time of need when my husband passed away. Not surprising because Carlton was always ready to give a helping hand for our church, for Boy Scouts of America Troop 127, family and friends. HAPPY because I have got to know him as a close friend. He will be missed.

Condolence from Currituck Senior Center Staff on June 19th, 2022 10:37 pm

We are so deeply saddened by the loss of Carlton. He always brightened our day with a great smile and fun conversation. He will be so missed. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Condolence from Judy Cohoon on June 19th, 2022 11:38 pm

Well seeing this obituary and seeing the pictures sure makes this real; it is just hard to imagine Carlton gone. I will miss Carlton riding around on his bike stopping and joking with anyone he comes in contact with. He was a true friend to my husband when he was sick, Carlton always knew the right words to say and knew when to say them. He did like to talk. While visiting Carlton in the hospital, we were talking about the sports he had enjoyed playing and he said that it wasn’t about the sports but those he played sports with. He was truly a champion of the man in need and doing and fighting for what is right. Carlton was just a good man and he made God proud to be his Father.

Condolence from John (Jack) wohner on June 21st, 2022 4:16 pm

Nedra, please accept my deepest condolences. I met Carlton on the golf course a few years back. Since that time, he was truly a boon companion. Somehow golf wont be quite as much fun. I’ll really mis Carlton.

Condolence from Tammy Babcock on June 22nd, 2022 10:43 am

What a beautiful life…watching this obituary brought it home that my friend is really gone. I know Carlton is with our Lord and Savior and that brings me peace. He was such a fine and upstanding man with great moral character that anyone who crossed his path looked up to! Carlton, I will miss your warm smile and your caring advice while I was on my own. You and Nedra helped me so much and I will never forget it. You brought a smile to my face anytime I saw you and heard you call me “Tammy Faye!” Rest easy my friend and know you were well loved! To Nedra and the family, Randy and I send our condolences and will continue to pray for comfort at this difficult time. We love you all and we are here for you anytime of the day or night!

Condolence from Claude Inge on July 8th, 2022 9:13 pm

i will always remember Loyd as a great friend and confidant where we shared many conversations about life, sports, business ,country and we always concluded our conversations with a joke ,or insult but with respect and laughter. We played many rounds of golf together at Stonehenge, golf trips, and on several occasions,he and Nedra invited me to stay at their home while we played golf. A special event was when we hiked the Grand Canyon, I was 75 at the time and Loyd was 72. It was a thing of beauty as I had a bad back and he had a bum knee, We also enjoyed water skiing at Lake Gaston. It’s hard to find a friend with whom you could share so many things together and enjoy the company,
,
