Condolence from Anne and Kevin Jennings on August 9th, 2015 9:00 pm

Thelis and Mack have always been very special cousins to both of us. July 20, 1969 was a special day which I vividly remember. Thanks to Cousin Mack, when I was 11 years old, I took my first ride in an airplane. Mack took my dad, Vernon Burgess, and me in a small plane. We took off from the grass strip in Elizabeth City and flew a circle around the Wright Memorial and then back to Elizabeth City. My family was living in Tennessee at the time and had come home for a summer vacation visit. After the airplane ride we went back to my grandparents’ place and watched the first lunar landing on an old black and white portable television. When Kevin and I started dating, I joked that everyone around here was related and that we were probably cousins. Turned out that Thelis was first cousin to Kevin’s mother and Mack was first cousin to my dad. It deeply saddens us that we have lost such a kind and generous soul far too soon. Our deepest and heart-felt sympathy goes out to all the family.

To all the family, I will remember Mack as a kind, generous person. This last year, I will remember him for all the hours that he coordinated and rang bells for the Salvation Army. That is a sacrifice and commitment and you have to love what you are doing. He reminded me of my Daddy. Love to all of you. He will be missed by many people.

Condolence from William E. Dunstan on August 12th, 2015 8:59 am

Dear Thelis,

After leaving your home yesterday in Ahoskie, I returned to Chapel Hill through a storm. As I parked my car, the sun appeared and created a beautiful double rainbow. The double rainbow made me think of the inspiring light that you and Mack created together.

Mack made his mark on this world through his good deeds and loving courtesy. I am glad that we enjoyed a nice visit in June at the Museum. I will keep you in my thoughts and heart.

With sympathy,
William E. Dunstan

Condolence from John Guard on August 13th, 2015 10:15 am

Thelis & Family,

I was saddened to learn of Mack’s passing. He had a servant heart and a giving spirit. We first met more than 30 years ago as fellow Lions. We had several mutual friends in the Ahoskie, Edenton and Elizabeth City areas. Mack’s dedication to helping others was borne out in his energetic and tireless work on behalf of the North Carolina Lions, the United Methodist Church and the Salvation Army. Our state and the Northeast have lost a special friend. May God bless you all!

Condolence from John & Jackie Sawyer on August 17th, 2015 8:25 pm

Dear Thelis and Family,
We were deeply saddened to learn of Mack’s passing. We feel blessed to have been with you both, Mackey and Margaret only a week before when you visited us at Millicent’s home. You both have been such wonderful friends from our days in school, on band trips around the country and the class reunions on which you worked so hard to keep our classmates together. We will always cherish a few of the many wonderful memories that Mack left with you, your family and host of friends. Our hearts and thoughts are with you in your time of grief.
