Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Bright Yancey, age 86, of Raleigh, NC passed peacefully to heaven on Monday, September 7, 2020 with her children at her side. Betty was a resident of The Oaks at Whitaker Glen-Mayview in Raleigh for the past four and ½ years.
Born July 10, 1934 in Elizabeth City, NC, Betty was the daughter of the late Evelyn Hooper Bright and Albert Dod Bright. She graduated from Elizabeth City High School in 1952 and went on to graduate from Peace College in 1954. She was a member of Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth City and a member of Christ Baptist Church in Raleigh. Betty is preceded in death by her brothers, George Albert Bright and Victor Anderson Bright, and a beloved great-aunt, Mary Elizabeth Bright, all of Elizabeth City.
Betty was known most for her volunteerism wherever she went. While in Elizabeth City, Betty volunteered at the Museum of the Albemarle, the Elizabeth City Police Department, and also enjoyed helping in adult literacy. In Raleigh, she spent many years as a volunteer for Transitions LifeCare of Wake Co., formally Hospice, earnestly caring for those she visited. Betty had an infectious ability to make people feel loved and accepted. She loved to laugh and was passionate about her family.

She is survived by her sons, Robert G. Yancey III and his wife Crystal, and Victor B. Yancey and his wife Holly, all of Raleigh; a daughter, Elizabeth (Liz) Yancey Sarvis of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Dr. Hunter Yancey and wife Catherine of Winston-Salem; Addison Yancey, and Catherine Yancey both of Raleigh; great-grandchild Sutton Yancey of Winston-Salem; and nieces, Hunter Darden of Elkin and Sharon Lubbers of Raleigh.
A private memorial service was held on Thursday, September 10, 2020 at Twiford Memorial Chapel in Elizabeth City. A private burial at New Hollywood Cemetery, Elizabeth City followed the memorial service.
