Mildred McDougald “Millie” Johnson died October 5, 2018. Millie was born in Fayetteville, NC to Lewis and Nora McDougald. She grew up in Camden, NC and then moved to the Hampton Roads area in 1981. After many requests from her family, Millie returned to Elizabeth City in 2012.
In the late 1970’s, Millie was very active in the Business and Professional Women’s Club and held a state office. Millie was employed at The Virginian Pilot for twenty years. During that time, she was assistant to two newsroom editors, Cole Campbell and Kay Addis. In 2002, she moved to the photography department as the administrative assistant.
For twenty-six years she was involved with a forty-year old art show that was originally held in Norfolk, the original Ghent Arts Festival that became Art Explosure in 1995 and finally became the Gosport Art Festival held on Mother’s Day weekend in Portsmouth. She served as co-chair in charge of artists, as the coordinator of the show, and then the committee of the show changed her title to Executive Director in 1998. It was her passion. She loved her committee and all the artists from across the nation that she met during her years running the show. Even through she was not an artist, she loved art and had quite a collection.
She is survived by her brothers, Donald (Wanda) and Ronald (Terressa); sisters, Denise (Gene) and Martha; nieces and nephews, Tenneil and children Lewis and Kellam, Donald, Jr. (Heather) and children Abigail and Barrett, Stephanie (Andrew) and son Jonathan, Joey (Ashley) and children Zoe and Daniel, Jimmy (Rachel) and children Abigail and Keeley, Dustin (Jenny) and daughter Kira, and Greg (Mallory); special nephew, Ralph (Mandi) and son Scott; and special niece, Samantha (Jeremy) and boys Gabe and Grayson.
