One of the joys of his life was taking his grandchildren camping, and they shared many fond memories of their trips with Grandma and Granddaddy. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and was an active member of church activities with his wife, Ludie. He was a charter member of the Woodville Inter-County Volunteer Fire Department and a proud member until he retired. He also was a member of the Ruritan Club and was always present to volunteer at their many activities
He left the family farm as a young man and worked in construction before starting at the Elizabeth City Shipyard. He then moved to Norshipco in Norfolk, where he worked until he retired in 1990. He always had a garden growing, loved planting tomatoes in the spring and was always happy to share his produce. He was a simple man who loved his family, his friends, and his dog, Scooter, and who helped others whenever and wherever he was needed.
He lost his wife of 66 years on December 26, 2012. Mr. Colson is survived by four children, Pauline Markham, and husband Wayne, and Ruth Ann Russell and husband James, Michael Colson, Sr. and wife, Gail and Paul Morris Colson, III and wife, Rose; nine grandchildren, Jamie Russell and wife, Susan, Bryan Markham, Melissa Russell, Courtney Baccus and husband, Jason, Michael Colson, Jr. and wife, Kate Bamberg, Margaret Samuels and husband, Yerodin, Alex Colson and wife, Alisha, Beth Ann Campbell and husband Stephen, and Morrisa Colson; and eight great-grandchildren, Morgan, Macy, Gabriel, Jackson, Andrew, Caroline, Axel and Rosaland.
In later years, he loved to tell stories of growing up on the family farm in Hog Neck with his brothers, Willie and Calvin, along with numerous cousins. His grandchildren carry loving memories of Granddaddy and loved to spend time with him. He was able to stay in his home with the help of caretakers, Cindy Vereen and Barbara Call, and in the last year of his life with the loving care of Morris and Rose Colson. He passed quietly at home surrounded by the memories of people he loved.
