Phyllis will be remembered as the kind and smiling lady who befriended my mother at Brookdale. They shared a dining table and Phyllis helped my mother so much. She was a sweetheart and obviously cared for her. She was a greeter to visitors as they entered Brookdale’s door. She was always cheerful during those years at the doctor’s office and just loved people. May she rest in peace and reap her reward for the kindness she has shown to so many over the years.

Condolence from Betty Bass on February 6th, 2021 8:28 pm

When I saw the picture of your Mom I thought I know that smile and I knew it was she. I was a member of the home extension club in Chowan County. We would help at the Craftsman fair in any way that they told us to do from helping the crafters to selling the food. We all loved going though the crafters and seeing what they had made since the last year. I always loved to see what your Mom had did. She was so friendly to everyone. The was one of the first people you wanted to see when you were there. I know it’s not going be easy to get though these first days that you have to go through. How I know the first, first is the hardest. The first Easter, the first thanksgiving & the first Christmas. It’s not easy but God is right there with you all. The second days are not as hard as the first. The seventh is what I am faceing this year of my husband passing. It’s the third for my Mom’s passing. I never knew how much I loved my husband until he took his last breath. I can’t believe that I could love my love one that much. Even though it is your Mom I know as sweet as she was you are going to have to have lots of first. Love remembering your Mom and keep the things that she liked alive as long as you can. In living memory, Betty Bass of Edenton NC

Condolence from RODNEY AND JENNIFER PARKER on February 7th, 2021 11:47 am

We are so sorry to learn Mrs. Sawyer passed away. She has a special place in our journey through life. Jenny and I met here before we got married. We met her when we rented 153 Belcross Road. back in 1998- 1999. That’s when the bond occurred. She would stop by often and have some sweet tea and talk about current events. She was such a “ray of sunshine”. She attended our wedding and we have videos of her dancing. As life moved on, whenever we saw her it was a given we would give each other big hugs. She will be missed. We send our love to all the family. RODNEY AND JENNIFER PARKER

Condolence from Linda Smithson Mercer on February 7th, 2021 11:58 am

Michael and Ann, I just have to share how much it meant to me to have spent time with Ms. Phyllis working on decorations for the Soybean Festival, especially the year she grew about 60 plus soybean plants in flower pots in her sunroom!! Hugh came in one day while I was there and the 3 of us reminisced about the high school senior play that Hugh and I were in, ” Nuts and Bolts”. We laughed a lot that day! Cherish your special memories !!

Condolence from Dona Whitehead Yunker on February 7th, 2021 12:31 pm

Mike, Ann and family, I am so sad to learn of Phyllis’ passing. I surely never realized that she had turned 90, as she never looked like she was aging to me. She was always dressed well, and wore a smile to match her personality. I first met her when she was a nurse at Dr.Nash,Jenkins & Williams office. We remained friends throughout the years through her Home Extension work, Craftman’s Guild, etc. She was certainly one of a kind, and heaven has gained an angel. I know she’s singing and dancing in the sky. May the memories she shared with you while here on earth give you some condolences and live on in your hearts. R.I.P. sweet friend. You will forever live on in my heart.

To my old friend Mike and the family, may peace be with you. Phyllis brought joy to life for so many. Aunt Phyliis was always so kind to me, even when Mike, Hugh and I got into mischief. I remember well all the times I spent with her during the summers and the winter weekends when I would visit and spend time on Grandad Sawyer’s farm. My favorite memory is when she asked me to drive her to PA for my cousin’s wedding. She let me drive her new blue ’67 mustang all the way there and back. I will always think of her with a smile.
