Richard “Pete” David Gilbert, age 63, of Penny Drive, Elizabeth City, NC entered eternal life on Friday, June 12, 2020 at his residence with family at his side. Pete loved God, his family, his friends, his community, and his country. He never met a stranger. He was a tireless Patriot, loyal friend, passionate husband, father and grandfather. The best of men. He was born in Portsmouth, VA on April 17, 1957 to the late Phillip Thomas Gilbert and Doris Magdaline Stancil Gilbert and was the devoted husband of Ramona “Mona” Deerfield Gilbert. He retired from the civil service at Norfolk Naval Shipyard as the Deputy Director of Training, after having worked as a Nuclear Welder, Supervisor, Zone Manager, and Assistant Project Superintendent. He was Chairman of the Pasquotank County GOP, President of the NNSY Golf Association, and Champion of the Veterans-Employee Readiness Group (NNSY).
In addition to Mona, his wife of thirty-nine years, Pete is survived by his children, Rhiana Srebro of Camden and Saxan Steed and husband Travis of Elizabeth City; five grandchildren, Dominic Srebro of Camden, Evelyn and Luna Steed of Elizabeth City, Mason Steed and Ava Steed of Pittsburg, PA; and his brother, Frederick T. Gilbert and wife Janice of Chesapeake, VA. He was preceded in death by a brother, Phillip Michael Gilbert.
A memorial celebration will be held at the Culpepper Inn, 609 W. Main Street, Elizabeth City at 5:30pm on Friday, June 19, 2020 for his Elizabeth City friends and family. A second memorial celebration will be held on June 28, 2020 from 2pm to 6pm at the Bide A Wee Golf Course Pavilion in Portsmouth, Virginia. Donations may be made in his honor to the VFW Post 6060, Suicide Awareness Program.
