Russell Lee Berry, 81, of Manns Harbor, N.C. passed away peacefully on January 2, 2020 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after a short illness.  Born in Hyde County N.C. on May 9, 1938, he was the son of the late Cecil Lee Berry and Mabel Ruth Watson Berry.

Russell always lived a very unique life.  Some have said that he was born 100 years too late.  After graduating from Manteo High School, he made his living as a very skilled mechanic and commercial fisherman, but his passion in life was deer hunting and collecting driftwood from the waters of Eastern North Carolina to sell to various merchants all over the state.  He was known locally as “The Driftwood Man”.

Russell is survived by a brother, Stafford Berry (Jean) of Wanchese, N.C. and numerous nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Carroll Berry, Ray Berry and Jimmy Berry along with sisters Gladys Wilson, Linda Pentecost and Nancy Ann Berry.

A memorial service is planned for Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 2:00 PM at the Roanoke Acres Church of Christ located at 1104 US Hwy 64/264 Manteo, N.C.

Very sorry for your loss. I bought my first pistol from Russell when he used to sell them. He’s always been kind.

Condolence from Mary Jolliff Moore on January 7th, 2020 11:25 am

Russell was my age (vintage 1938) but was friends with Buddy for years. Buddy would latch on to something Russell had said or done, and would tell about it for years. One example is funny, but not really fit for publishing here. He was brother to many, including my friends Gladys and Linda. To his family, my condolences and my love. I have fond memories of many of your clan, and they make me smile. Let your memories make you smile, and keep them. Love, Mary

My condolences to the family of Russell. I knew him during the 70’s while I was a young man & he made such an impression on me regarding taking my time. I don’t think he knew what a lasting impression he made on me. I would expect that there are many more people out there like me. God bless you Russell – Randy Kowalczyk

I will miss Russell. Known him for years, I loved to talk guns with Russel. His hunting skills and experience were to be envied. A true native son that didn’t stray from his roots.
