Thurl Albert “Butch” Pursell of 109 Chesterfield Drive, Elizabeth City, NC passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Winslow Memorial Home. He was born in Shenandoah, IA, on June 9, 1936 to the late Duane Thurl Pursell and Edna Tally Pursell. He served twenty-two years in the U.S. Coast Guard and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1976. He was a member of the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post #6060 and a lifetime member of the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association.
He is survived by his wife, Maxie Pursell of the home; two daughters, Kathleen Louise Pursell of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Ilene Pursell Ulm (Bill Trossen) of Point Harbor, NC; a step-daughter, Charlene Woodcock (John) McPherson of Elizabeth city, NC; a step-son, Max Keith (Betty) Woodcock of New Bern, NC; a brother, Doyle Dean (LaVonne) Pursell of Bosie, ID; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was pre-deceased by a granddaughter, Keile Ulm. A special thanks to all the staff at Winslow Memorial Home, especially the 700 hall for all the love and tender care given him during his illness.
A graveside service will be Monday, March 23, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at West Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Bryan Pease officiating.
