Timothy Ira Sobotka, 48, of Wanchese, NC died Thursday, January 9, 2020.

Born in Riverhead, NY on October 1, 1971, he was the son of Frank John Sobotka and the late Phylis Irene Etheridge.

Longline captain of his fishing vessel The Bluefin, Timmy was at peace when he was at sea. Big, beloved, devoted badass pirate fisherman, he was an avid and devoted commercial fisherman with a larger than life character and a big soft heart of gold. Family to all who knew him, he will be sorely missed by the Wanchese/Outer Banks community and all along the East Coast from Greenport, Long Island, New York to the Florida Keys.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his sister, Jennifer L. Harrell of Wanchese; nephew, Angelo; two nieces, Crystal and Nicole; two great-nieces, Dana and Deja; great-nephew, River; and his dog, Coral.

A funeral will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at Wanchese Assembly of God with Rev. Kenny Midgett and Rev. Dustin Daniels officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives for a viewing and visitation one hour prior to the service.

I must tell this one important story about this man, to show you the man some of you may not know. A few years ago, the love of my life made a bad choice and was with a person who did not appreciate him or anyone else. She ran him over and ran. Left him for dead to save herself. Timmy was there. He told me personally that Gary, after being run down by a vehicle, that crushed his chest , ribs, and his face and teeth, as well as breaking his ankle, got up to walk to keep going. Timmy picked up his teeth and grabbed him and held him down until the ambulance got there. The cops were telling him not to touch him and to get away from the blood and asked him if he realized what he was doing. Timmy told me he let them know that he’d known this man his whole life and he wasn’t gonna let him hurt himself anymore than he’d already been hurt. And he wasn’t scared of the blood. He just held him until help arrived. THAT is love and THAT is courage. And while I had already loved Timmy my whole life, I loved him even more after that.

I’m certainly sorry he has left the community but we all have lots of memories and he will live larger than life with us all. May God bring peace to all the family.

Condolence from Suzy Wescott on January 14th, 2020 10:02 am

Praying peace and comfort for Jennifer’s family and the Etheridges. My heart aches to think I won’t run into Timmy in person anymore. I think we’ve known each other since the age of 6 at Manteo Elementary, I definitely remember a teacher in 2nd grade walking him down the hall leading him by the Ear, he’s always been a big, lovable, handful! And so many fun memories in High School. More recently, I would see him when he was in from the boat and would stop in and visit us at Source Church. He gave the best hugs ever!! God’s Grace is So Much Bigger than the circumstances of this event, I know without a doubt the sincerity of Timmy’s heart and that he is now with the Lord.
