Trudy Cecelia Quidley Payne, 81, of Wanchese NC, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, October 3, 2019.  In the company of her family, and in the home she had lived for over sixty years, she made her final trip to heaven.

A native of Dare County, she was born July 19, 1938, to the late Geraldine Daniels and Cornelius Augustus Sutton Quidley.

A faithful member of Wanchese Assembly of God, “Momma Trudy” served her church family in many ways, but her heart’s passion was her three decades of service as the coordinator for the Missionettes, an Assembly of God discipleship program geared towards young girls. Over the years she has mentored hundreds of young ladies and has celebrated with fifty-nine of them as they were crowned “Honor Stars”.

The legacy she leaves behind is more than just her ministry to the church. Her true legacy is seen in the lives of her beloved family. To them, “Gammie” was their spiritual example that covered the family with tear-soaked prayers on a daily basis. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren described her as truly self-sacrificing, loving, graceful, godly, nice and kind. Statements like, “She was an angel” and “Gammie loved me” describe her perfectly.

In addition to her parents, Trudy was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Corbet Payne; son, Rudy Lee Payne; sister, Judy Quidley Westphal; and brother, Barry Wayne Quidley.

Trudy is survived by three daughters, Ida “Gerry” Payne Heath and her husband Tim of Wanchese, Camilla Payne Piercy of Wanchese, and April Payne LaCount and her husband John of Manteo; nine grandchildren, Daniel Heath and his wife Daphnie, Deborah Heath, April Michelle Pope, Adam Pope, Stephen Piercy, Joshua LaCount, Jacqueline LaCount Smithwick and her husband Hunter, Jessika LaCount, and Jillian LaCount; and nine great-grandchildren: Tabitha, Elizabeth, Nathaniel, Elijah, Felicity, Harmony, Melody, Judah, and Aslan. Also, surviving are two sisters: Esther Quidley Dellinger and Pamela Quidley Ells-Johnson both of Chesapeake, VA; and special niece and nephews, Warren, Hannah, and Logan Westphal and Corey Quidley.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 7, 2019, at Wanchese Assembly of God with Rev. John LaCount and Rev. Kenny Midgett officiating. Private burial will take place at Tillett cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives for a viewing and visitation on Sunday evening from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Twiford Colony Chapel.

Very sorry to hear of Ms. Trudy’s passing. I remember her from the days at the WCA always helping with the school lunches. Condolence from Mary Jolliff Moore on October 5th, 2019 10:15 am

I knew Trudy and Judy as sort of one entity. I don’t know if they were twins–maybe just close. So nice, and never critical of others. Gerry and Milla, y’all are the daughters I remember. Maybe April, a bit, but I think she was younger still. Anyhow, I want to let y’all know that my good thoughts and prayers on your behalf are in the air. I pray God will keep you in His loving arms, and that your sweet memories will sustain you through these tough times and in the future. Love each other. The old song that said to “love your neighbor, walk up and say ‘How be you?’ Gee, but it’s good to see you.” That’s something to live up to and love up to. Love, Mary

Condolence from Ruth Dalton on October 6th, 2019 12:36 am

I could write a message of endless praise about Trudy Payne and all of her esteemed virtues: faithful, kind, loving, giving, praying, serving and caring, but there would be no place to stop. Jesus changed her life and she imparted that change in all she did for others. So many memories my girls and I share of her, the love expressed in those beautiful handmade native dolls and the special care to search for the perfect gifts each Christmas mean more than words can say. Everything that reminds us of her, we count as a priceless treasure. We feel the loss and are overwhelmed, grateful and honored to have made these sweet memories. Her love was genuine, just life her faithfulness. The impact for Christ she made in our lives we will carry forever. Thank you, Sis. Trudy “Mama Trudy” for giving to the Lord…we are lives that were changed. We came behind you and found you faithful…My thoughts and prayers are with you, her beloved family. Thanks for sharing her with the rest of us. Love you dearly, Ruth Dalton

Condolence from Rosemary Wallio on October 21st, 2019 7:21 pm

To all of Trudy’s family, I express my deepest sympathy for the loss of this precious lady. Many years ago I made home visits to work with April before she was school age. I loved going to Trudy’s home and meeting Adam and so many of you, her beloved family. I even met Judy “Q” on many occassions. The love of Trudy’s home and between all of you made an impact on my life in such a positive way. I have not forgotten any of you in the last 30 plus years. I know that God will watch over all of you in your grief. What a legacy!! Ms. Rosie
