Croley Virginia opt

Virginia Sears Croley, 92, of Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Waterbrooke Nursing Home. She was born April 12, 1929 in Pasquotank County to the late Halsey Lee Sears and Helen Denby Sears. She graduated from Elizabeth City High School where she played clarinet. Upon graduation she attended The Kirby School of Cosmetology in Norfolk, VA and worked in downtown Elizabeth City. She later was the owner operator of Edgewood Beauty Shop for over forty years. She worked part-time for Guardian Care for twenty years as a beautician. She found working in the nursing home to be very rewarding. She was a lifelong member of The First Baptist Church where she taught the fifth-grade Sunday School for over fifty years, and sang in the choir. She also volunteered at the Albemarle Hospital for forty years. She loved flowers and enjoyed working in her yard where she kept beautiful flower beds. She enjoyed all sorts of crafts: sewing, furniture restoration, and ceramics. She once took a brick laying class at COA with her friend Sara White. She loved cross word puzzles and solving the daily CryptoQuip. Always a positive person, her motto was, “You can do it!”

The family wishes to thank the staffs of Waterbrooke, Albemarle Homecare and Hospice, and Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation for their care of our mother.

She is survived by two sons, Mark Croley of Elizabeth City, NC, and Tom Croley (Melanie) of Suffolk, VA; six grandchildren, Roy Marriner, Jack Croley, Tye Croley, Evan Croley, Blake Croley, and Molly (Grant) Walker; and one great granddaughter, Landry Elisabeth Walker. She was pre-deceased by two brothers, H. L. Sears and Ernest Sears.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to The First Baptist Church, 300 West Main Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Condolence from robert pitchford on April 28th, 2021 6:21 pm

I called Mrs Virginia momma., the day we moved in to our house on penny dr. She came over and told the moving truck they would have to move because her clients had to have access to her salon. Quickly she had me divulging my life story right there in the driveway. Gina helped fill a void I had from loosing my mom to cancer. Navigating my way around Elizabeth city I would liken my connection with her to people and it would seem to ease my “outsider “ or coastie transplant stigma. I took over mowing her grass when I noticed she would get winded and sit under her tree. She refused but I am stubborn as well.!!! She would pay me in brownies once a month ., my girls knew they were mine and not to touch them.. ‘ momma I will keep things tidy for you down here while you get all those ladies shipshape up there. Love you.

Condolence from Robin Harris on April 30th, 2021 9:13 am

Mark and Tommy,
So sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. She was indeed a very kind and sweet person who did so many nice things for others – day in and day out. She gave me my first perm at around age 6 (my hair was as straight as a board and I guess she and my mom plotted to get me a new “do”) and I thought was going to perish from the event…but I made it through with her sweet encouragement even though I am pretty sure she could see my face in that beauty shop mirror was not very happy – but I still have the picture and laugh when I see it and think of how she and mom told this little “tomboy” how “beautiful” I looked about 7000 times that day- even though I didn’t recognize myself. I’m not sure whether they really meant it or were just trying to get themselves out of trouble with a 6 year old. Many years after this trauma – I recovered – and I’ve had a few perms since them – but none ever impacted me like that one!! But I’ll also say – none of those subsequent beauticians told me how beautiful I was 7000 times either. She never forgot a birthday and gave away little trinkets at Christmas time and always signed a card with how “special” someone was. But really the “specialness” was in her.
Thanks for sharing your mom through those years with so many in the community, including me. May she rest in sweet peace.
Thinking of you both in your loss,
Robin Harris

I’ll always remember Mrs. Croley sending me Birthday cards to me throughout my young years and so loving and warming when I greeted her in church, hospital, or any venue. “Come here precious”….was a saying she always bestowed upon me upon greeting me. She will be dearly missed and my deepest condolences to the family over this painful event even though we all know she went to Heaven.
